Simon fumbled with the doorknob for a few frantic seconds before flinging it open, running through and slamming into a front porch post. The impact forced a stream of deep-red phlegm rippling from the corner of his mouth to snap free and fly end over end into the cold Dresden night.

He whipped his head left and right with eyes popped wide, searching every inch of dark street before him.

He cringed, hearing a door slam followed by rapid-fire footsteps clapping down the staircase he scrambled down seconds earlier. Simon pushed from the post he was clutching, springing off the icy porch to the slick sidewalk three steps down.

Shit, I’ll never make it. That little shit is fast, he thought, assessing his current situation while running with frequent looks over his shoulder to gauge the closing gap between him and the three shadows chasing him. This is way too close. Coco better be there, Unlock the door, he texted while scrambling down the icy street.

He looked down to see a thumbs-up come in response as he ran a tangent through the next intersection onto Schweizer, looking back to see the three only a block back and coming fast. Simon slipped, falling to the street, and slamming into the curb, springing up to his feet and…
